Halloween might not be the same this year with Covid-19, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress up and have a fun night in with family! As you put the finishing touches on your costumes and put out the last of the halloween decorations, here are some of Dr. Colaço’s Halloween skincare tips for before and after the fun face paints and makeup!

Step 1: Prep & Makeup

Your Halloween skin care routine should start even before you put on your fun Halloween makeup! Prepping your face beforehand can minimize dry skin and can even help your makeup stay on smoother. First, start with a gentle cleanser to clean off your face. Then use a moisturizer to lock in moisture and keep your face hydrated. If you have oilier skin, try an oil-free moisturizer! Cleansing and moisturizing before applying your Halloween makeup will ensure that your skin isn’t dry and will make sure it’s healthy and hydrated throughout the night.

Next, when you’re applying your face paints and makeup be sure to use a clean brush (especially if you’re sharing with a friend!). Using a dirty brush can clog pores and cause breakouts! Then have a fun night looking your Halloween best!

Step 2: Makeup Removal

After the socially distanced Halloween festivities, be sure to remove all of your makeup before heading to bed! Leaving face paints and makeup on overnight can irritate the skin, causing breakouts, bumps, clogged pores, puffy eyes, and overall aggravated skin. Keep your skin happy by washing off your face. It’s not enough to use a makeup removing wipe for heavy duty makeup nights like Halloween! Using just a makeup wipe and moisturizer can push dirt and small particles into your pores, causing your skin to breakout when you wake up the next morning.

Instead, wash your face with a gentle cleanser to get the paints, foundation, and glitter off your face. Make sure you wash off forgotten areas like the eyelids, up to your hairline, and your neck. Dr. Colaço says using products like coconut oil are great for removing makeup too (as long as your skin is not prone to acne)!

Whatever you use, gentle cleanser or coconut oil, just be sure to get all of the makeup off or you might wake up to more clogged pores and pesky breakouts!

Step 3: Rehydrate and Rest

After cleansing, be sure to add in a few steps to your routine to rejuvenate your skin before bed. Before putting on a moisturizer, try a facial oil or serum to give your skin some extra hydration after a long night! Then moisturize with a rich night cream to add some moisture back into your skin. Finally, show your eyes and lips some extra love with an eye cream and a lip balm (vaseline or Aquaphor work great!).

Halloween is a little different this year, but that doesn’t mean we have to miss out on the holiday spirit and fun costumes and decorations! Just be sure to take extra care of your skin so it stays “BOO”-tiful the next morning! 👻
